When is the Best Time to Go Scuba Diving on Koh Samui?

If you’re dreaming of turquoise waters, tropical sunshine, and underwater adventures, you’re probably wondering: when is the best time to go scuba diving on Koh Samui?

Koh Samui, Thailand’s second-largest island, is famous for its luxury resorts, buzzing nightlife, and stunning beaches - but it’s also a fantastic base for scuba diving.

While the island itself has only a handful of dive sites, Koh Samui serves as a gateway to the Gulf of Thailand’s top underwater destinations, including Sail Rock, Angthong Marine Park, Southwest Pinnacle, Chumphon Pinnacle, and Koh Tao - world-class dive spots that are easy day trips from Samui.

To help you plan your perfect Koh Samui dive holiday, let’s break down the island’s diving conditions throughout the year.

Koh Samui’s Diving Seasons

Koh Samui generally has three main weather patterns: Hot and Dry, Hot and Windy, and Wet!

Hot & Dry Season (February | May)

This is widely considered the best time for scuba diving around Koh Samui. The weather is calm, sunny, and dry, providing excellent sea conditions and superb underwater visibility -often reaching 20–30 meters. This makes it the perfect period to spot whale sharks, schools of barracudas, and vibrant reef fish.

Air temperatures can soar up to 36°C with high humidity, rarely dropping below 28°C. The water is very warm too, often reaching 30°C or more. The hottest months are March through May, so if you love tropical heat, this is the ideal time to visit Koh Samui for diving adventures.

Hot & Windy Season (June | October)

During these months, Koh Samui experiences its hot and windy season. Afternoon winds bring some relief from the heat, though daytime temperatures can still reach around 34°C. The sea is warm, averaging 29°C, and gradually cools toward the end of the season.

Diving is still very possible, but you may encounter slightly choppier seas and occasional reduced visibility due to the wind. Some dive sites may need adjustment or be temporarily inaccessible, especially between July and September when the wind is strongest.

The upside? Marine life is still incredible during this period. Expect to see turtles, giant groupers, and big pelagics at Sail Rock. With flexible planning, you can enjoy safe and memorable dives despite the gusty conditions.

Wet Season (November – January)

November marks Samui’s monsoon season and is typically the wettest month. Despite the name, it’s rare for rain to last all day. Most showers occur as short, intense afternoon thunderstorms, offering a refreshing cool change while leaving plenty of sunshine.

During this period, you may experience several consecutive rainy days followed by bright, sunny skies. The upside for divers: fewer crowds and quieter dive sites, allowing for a more relaxed experience exploring the Gulf of Thailand. Heavy rains can sometimes affect ferry crossings and limit diving days, but once the weather clears, diving remains highly rewarding.

Where to Dive from Koh Samui

Koh Samui itself has limited dive sites directly on the island, so most divers take day trips to nearby top locations:

  • Sail Rock - A world-class dive site famous for big fish action, pelagic encounters, and occasional whale sharks.

  • Koh Tao - Thailand’s diving paradise, offering a wide variety of sites suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced divers.

  • Ang Thong Marine Park - Stunning underwater landscapes with vibrant reefs, and diverse marine life.

  • Southwest Pinnacle - A popular site known for healthy coral formations and exciting encounters with larger fish species.

All of these dive sites are easily accessible from Koh Samui, making them must-visit destinations for anyone serious about scuba diving in the Gulf of Thailand.

So, When is the Best Time to Go Scuba Diving on Koh Samui?

You can enjoy diving in Koh Samui all year long, but the best time for scuba diving is between February and June, when conditions are at their absolute best. During this period, the seas are calm, visibility is excellent, and marine life is abundant.

Even if you don’t mind occasional wind or rain, you can still enjoy amazing dives almost any time of the year, with the added bonus of fewer crowds during the off-season.
