Learn to Dive in Koh Samui: What to Expect from Your PADI Open Water Diver Course

Two students learning to use scuba diving equipment on the first day of their PADI Open Water Diver course in Koh Samui with instructor guidance.

Dreaming of taking the plunge into the underwater world? Koh Samui is not just palm trees, sunsets, and cocktails on the beach, it’s also your gateway to becoming a certified diver with the PADI Open Water Diver Koh Samui Course. Whether it’s your first taste of scuba or the start of a lifelong passion, here’s exactly what you can expect when you sign up.

1. Getting Started | Knowledge & eLearning

Before you even dip your fins in the water, you’ll go through the theory part of diving. Thanks to PADI’s eLearning, most of it can be done online at your own pace before arriving in Thailand. You’ll cover dive physics, equipment, safety, and marine life awareness. Once on Koh Samui, your instructor will review the essentials with you and clear up any questions before moving on to the fun part.

2. Confined Water Training | Pool Session

Your first breaths underwater will take place in a trainning pool. This is where you’ll practice essential scuba skills like mask clearing, buoyancy control, regulator recovery, and basic emergency procedures. It might feel a little strange at first, but your instructor will guide you patiently until you feel comfortable and confident.

3. Open Water Dives | The Real Adventure

This is where the magic happens. You’ll hop on a speedboat and head out to some of the Gulf of Thailand’s most stunning dive sites. Over two days, you’ll complete four open water dives, gradually building your confidence and increasing your depth from 0 to 18 meters. Expect to be amazed by vibrant coral gardens, butterflyfish and angelfish, and shoals of barracudas. If luck is on your side, you might even spot a curious turtle or a passing whale shark!

4. The Course Structure | 3 Days

The PADI Open Water Diver course usually runs across 3 days, depending on your pace. A typical schedule looks like this:

  • Day 1: Orientation, knowledge development, and confined water session.

  • Day 2: 2 open water dives (max 12 meters).

  • Day 3: 2 more open water dives (max 18 meters). By the end, you’ll be a certified PADI Open Water Diver, able to dive independently with a buddy anywhere in the world up to 18m.
